Summer comes early in the Alpujarra, made famous by Chris Stewart in his book Driving Over Lemons. The lower slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains are carpeted with a vast array of wild flowers, the snow remains on the higher slopes, but melt water ensures that everything feels new and green.

The week is based at the hotel Sol in Lanjaron, in Spain’s famous spa town.
Our itinerary of moderately challenging walking is designed to give you a taste of the variety of landscape available in the area, whilst still offering views of Spain’s highest mountain, Mulhacen.

Alpujarra Walking Itinerary

Day 1 Pick up from Malaga Airport, settle into hotel and guided tour of Lanjaron

Day 2 A circuit of the Rio Lanjaron, walking from the hotel we ascend the slopes of the Lanjaron gorge, emerging beneath the old ‘forest centre’ at Tello. Returning through terraces and farmland back to the town, with great views of the Lujar mountains to the south, this is a great introduction to the area.

Day 3 A circuit in the Poqueira Gorge from Pampaneira. One of the iconic valleys of the Alpujarra, with wonderful views of the snow covered high mountains, this is an enjoyable ascent. Returning through the villages of Capileira and Bubion, to the

Day 4 Ascent of Trevenque (2079m). Many consider this to be the ‘jewel’ of the mountain summits with great views to the high mountains from it’s summit.

Day 5 Taha circuit; the Taha is a rather special valley, La Taha de Pitres, is the name given to the Moorish district of seven little villages in their own sunny enclave. Our route goes crosses the Trevelez river, with it’s gushing waters fed from the high mountains to follow the southern slopes of the gorge, through almond groves and pine forest before folioing an ancient mule track back to the valley floor. The northern slopes are well cultivated with terraced fields, chestnuts and a renowned mineral spring.

Day 6 The Monachil gorge , with Granada to the west and the Sierra Nevada to the east, the steep sided valley is criss-crossed by metal rope bridges and offers is a very different experience for intrepid explorers.

Day 7 The Poqueira Refuge; although there will still be snow on the slopes of Mulhacen, mainland Spain’s highest mountain, we are able to follow an easy path along it’s flanks and enjoy that ‘high mountain’ experience before descending to the Poqueira refuge for lunch a fitting end to a great week’s walking.

Day 8 Return to Malaga for flights home.

We reserve the right to change this itinerary depending on the weather, snow conditions and needs of the group.

Snowshoeing is a great way for walkers to enjoy the snowy mountains that would otherwise be impossible without ski’s. The Sierra Nevada has a good track record for snow and has Europe’s most southerly ski resort “Sol Nieve” which translates to ‘sun and snow’. Our holiday however stays well clear of the pistes and concentrates on genuine back country snowshoeing away from the crowds discovering areas rarely visited in winter.

Hotel based, we travel out daily to a new area for our adventures. This weeks holiday is “full board” and includes six days of guided Snowshoeing (though you can of course take a day off!). Our guides are fully qualified International Mountain Leaders so you can be sure that you are in safe hands whilst out.

Mountain House Holidays can provide you with snowshoes and poles free of charge so your daily equipment need only consist of your normal winter walking kit. We will supply all people with a full kit list.

A sample itinerary for this holiday:

Day 1 – meet at Malaga airport, drive to Lanjaron. There should be time to explore this historic spa town and it’s castle.

Day 2 – drive to Capileira, have an introduction to snowshoeing in the forest above the village, walking a circuit to 2200m.

Day 3 – circular route in forest and mountains above Puente Palo in the Sopotujar area.

Day 4 – excursion to nordic ski resort of Puerto de la Ragua, ascending through forest to the Sierra Nevada ridge with possible ascent of peaks up to 2,700m depending on conditions.

Day 5 – driving above Capileira we ascend to Hoya de Portillo and through the forest to a viewpoint overlooking the Trevelez valley. We may even catch a glimpse of Africa.

Day 6 – snowshoeing in upper Rio Lanjaron with varied terrain including open slopes, tracks and forest.

Day 7 – walk the western flank of Caballo, mainland Spain’s most westerly 3000m peak – a grand day out!

Day 7 – return to Malaga airport

7 days guided backpacking holiday
£645 based on group of 6

Our version of the classic traverse of the highest peaks in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range; a must for regular hill walkers who like a sense of adventure and exploration.

The Sierra Nevada is the third highest mountain range in Europe and boasts not only mainland Spain’s highest mountain, but over 20 peaks above 3,000 metres. Although mountain walking is becoming more popular in Spain, you can still climb many of the Sierra Nevada’s mountains and see no other people; many parts of this trip through the mountains retain that true wilderness quality.

This holiday involves 6 days of backpacking; 3 nights spent ‘wild’ camping and 3 nights in refuges. Although not technically difficult, the trip does involve some hard and committing days, but the effort is richly rewarded by dramatic views, and a real appreciation of the mountain environment.

This holiday is only available for groups; Contact us to ask for more details.

3000 metre peaks Itinerary

Day 1
We meet you at Malaga Airport and transport you to Lanjaron, gateway to the Alpujarra and Sierra Nevada. We spend our first night in the Hotel Lanjaron and set about preparations for our expedition.

Day 2
We depart from Lanjaron by car for Trevelez where we begin our walk. Trevelez is the highest village in Spain at 1480m. Our walk takes us up the Rio Trevelez to our first nights camp near the Lagunillo del Puerto at 2740m.

Day 3
We ascend to the main Sierra Nevada ridge at Puerto Trevelez (2790m) and follow this via Puntal de Juntillas (3139m), Puntal de los Cuartos (3158m), Pico de la Justica o Atalaya (3135m) and Pico del Cuervo (3144m) before descending to the Laguna de Vacares (2790m) for our nights camp. If time and conditions permit it may be possible to bag 3 additional peaks, Picon de Jerez (3139m), Cereo Pelao (3181m) and Cerro del Mojon Alto (3167m) this will be decided by the guide on the day.

Day 4
Starts with a short steep ascent back up to the ridge at 2980. We then continue our traverse over Puntal de Vacares (3136m), Puntal de las Calderetas (3066m), Puntal de El Goteron and Alcazaba (3371m), before descending to Siete Lagunas to make camp.

Day 5
Today we ascend Mulhacen (3482m) the highest peak in mainland Spain. We descend down Mulhacen’s west ridge to the Caldera bivi Refuge (3040m) and descend the rio Mulhacen to the fully catered Poqueira refuge, where we will spend the night.

Day 6
From the refuge we follow the Rio Seco to the old Sierra Nevada Road, which leads to the Carihuela bivy refuge, where we will spend the night. From here, an easy ascent of Veleta (3394m), mainland Spain’s 2nd highest mountain is possible.

Day 7
For our final day, there is the possibility of an easy scramble along the Tajos de la Virgin or alternatively descending to the Lagunillies de la Virgin and picking up the Verea Corta which is a really nice path. Both ways bring us to the old Elorrieta Refuge (3060m). From The Elorrieta we follow the Verea Corta to the Caballo Refuge and an ascent of Cerro del Caballo (3005m) which is Europe’s most westerly 3000m peak.

All that remains is the 2 hour descent to the road head at Ventura 2100m where transport awaits to take us down a series of dirt tracks back to the hotel Lanjaron for a hotel bed and a beer!

Day 8
We return you back to Malaga airport.

We reserve the right to change this itinerary depending on the weather, snow conditions and needs of the group.
